THE PROBLEM

India faces significant healthcare shortcomings, ranking 66th globally for healthcare security in 2021, with just 0.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people. The nation struggles with inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of beds and medical professionals, and a high financial burden on the population.
Accessibility to doctors and healthcare is further limited, especially due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has strained resources and disrupted traditional healthcare delivery.

These challenges are worsened by the rise of new diseases, disproportionately affecting non-urban areas where doctor shortages are exacerbated by migration to metropolitan cities.
In 2021, out-of-pocket health expenditure in India accounted for approximately 50% of the country's total health spending.
In March 2022, community health centers in rural India faced an 80% shortage of specialist doctors, including surgeons and pediatricians.
